MLB Sweeps: How Often Teams Avoid the Sweep in Game 3

Sweeps feel common and Game 3 feels desperate. Across 14,406 three-game series, neither is quite true, and the 0-2 home side plays like any other home side.

The broadcast graphic always appears before Game 3: a team down 0-2, facing the broom. Commentators frame it as desperation, and the betting market sometimes prices it that way. I wanted to know whether the sweep is as real a threat as it feels, so I rebuilt 14,406 three-game and 3,651 four-game series from public records covering 2000 to 2025.

The headline answer is calmer than the story. Only 26.9% of three-game series ended in a sweep, and home teams down 0-2 won Game 3 52.9% of the time, almost exactly what they manage in a level rubber game. If you use my MLB game tips page, this is the background I carry into every series finale.

1Most three-game series end 2-1, not in a sweep

The stacked bar splits every series from the home side. Home teams swept 16.7% and were swept 10.2%, while most results sit in the middle: 38.9% were home wins 2-1 and 34.2% were away wins 2-1. A split series is the normal outcome. The broom is the exception.

Game 1 matters, but it does not decide things. When the home team won Game 1 it took the series 79.1% of the time, yet when the visitor won the opener the home side still won the series 27.8% of the time.

The decade rows barely move. Home sweeps were 17.5% in 2000-09 and 16.0% in 2020-25, with away sweeps edging from 9.8% to 10.7%. That drift is too small to build on, though it does suggest home advantage across a series has not grown.

2Home teams down 0-2 win Game 3 at a normal rate

This is the chart I find most useful. Home teams facing a sweep won Game 3 52.9% of the time across 3,105 games, against 52.8% in 1-1 rubber games (6,978) and 53.8% across all 61,628 games. There is no collapse and no desperation bounce. The 0-2 home side simply plays like a home side.

Home teams up 2-0 and chasing the sweep won 55.8% of 4,323 games. The main caveat applies here. These figures are not adjusted for team strength, and a team that has won the first two is more often the better club, so I read that higher number as quality showing through rather than momentum.

Home down 0-2 (3,105)52.9%
All games (61,628)53.8%

For pricing, the 'avoid the sweep' story deserves no premium either way. I start Game 3 from the pitching matchup and bullpen workload, not from the series score.

3Four-game series split 2-2 more than anything else

Add a fourth game and sweeps get rarer. Home teams went 4-0 in 330 of 3,651 series (9.0%), and visitors managed it in 219 (6.0%). The most common result was a 2-2 split at 35.4%, ahead of home 3-1 wins at 28.3% and home teams losing 1-3 at 21.3%.

Split 2-21,29135.4%
Home wins 1-377921.3%
Away sweep 4-02196.0%

The longer the series, the more results drift towards the middle, which is exactly what an honest sport should do over a long schedule. I do not treat the last game of a four-game set as a special spot just because one side is chasing a clean sweep.

4Season sweep rates wander but show no lasting trend

By season, the share of three-game series ending in a sweep ranged from 23.4% to 29.5%, and 2025 landed at 28.0%. The shortened 60-game 2020 season is left off the line, though it remains in the totals.

What I see is noise around a steady centre, not a shift. A season near the top of the range is not a sign that sweeps are becoming more common, and one near the bottom is not proof of new parity. Over the full period the rate settles at 26.9%.

Betting notes

  • Ignore the broom narrative. Home teams down 0-2 won Game 3 52.9% of the time, essentially the 52.8% rubber-game rate. Price the matchup, not the series score.
  • Discount 2-0 momentum claims. The 55.8% for home teams going for the sweep likely reflects better teams, since strength is not adjusted. Check the starter and bullpen before paying for that edge.
  • Expect splits in four-gamers. 35.4% of four-game series ended 2-2 and only 9.0% were home sweeps. Be sceptical of series prices that lean hard towards a sweep.
