Living in Dubai put a world-class racing calendar on my doorstep, and the carnival nights under the lights were where I first understood that a race is decided long before the gates open. The breeding, the surface, the barrier, the likely tempo — I learned to read those threads as a teenager and never stopped pulling on them. The wager was always secondary to the puzzle of why a beaten favourite was beaten. My tips grow out of patient form study: how the track is playing on the day, where the early speed is drawn and how the race should be run, suitability of trip and surface, and the trainer and jockey patterns that don't show up in the headline form. I lean toward each-way and place value, because over a season a genuinely mispriced runner is worth far more than a short favourite that only looks safe. Ten years in, I respect how much luck lives in a single contest — a tardy break, a wide passage, a scrimmage at a vital point. So I focus on a sound process and a fair price, and I would always rather explain why a horse appeals than hand out a winner I can't promise. — Aisha Rahman
